Purchasing your first Child Restraint System
1. Make sure your car seat supports up to 22lb. If possible look for a seat that supports heavier weights rear facing. Baby is safer traveling rear facing as long as possible.

2.  Look for the CMVSS ( Canadian motor vehicle safety standard) sticker. This label will be on the car seat, that tells you the car seat has been tested.  All car seats are tested at the same level to receive the CMVSS sticker approval.

If the car seat is bought outside of Canada it does not have the CMVSS sticker, it will not be recognized and will not be installed into your vehicle.

1.  Buy a Forward facing seat that has the adjustable straps at the front or sides of the car seat.  When the child grows it is easier to adjust, and the car seat does not have to be removed from the vehicle.

2. Make sure your Forward facing car seat supports the weight of  the child. Find a seat that supports a heavier weight over 40lb if possible.  The five point harness is the safest way to travel.

DO NOT rush into forward facing car seat, leave your child in rear facing as long as possible!!!
Weighing 18kg or more but less than 36 kg (40-80 lb)  Child is 145 cm (4 feet 9 inches tall)
1. Purchase a booster seat that has a supportive back piece as well as a base.  This is safer, it will place the child's seat belt in the proper position over the shoulder and away from the neck.

2.  When placing a child in a booster seat, make sure you pull your seat belt out all the way and listen for it to retract into the seat belt system.  Have your child snug in with little movement from side to side and forward. This will keep your child in a safe position in case of a collision.
